12 Facebook Tips for BusinessI've been on Facebook for my businesses for a few years now and it has taken quite a while for me to get my head around it. I can easily see how it has the ability to be great at connecting people socially and for businesses to be able to form really interesting relationships and conversations with customers.

What I found initially challenging was how to make it work for my business and surprisingly I still have times when I'm arguing away with Facebook about some change in functionality making me learn a new way of doing the same thing.

The key for me getting my head around making Facebook a valuable tool for my business has been learning from those making it work for them. I started this my doing a series of interviews with business owners making money from followers. When I started the social media marketing seminar series I made sure there was a focus on Facebook for Business too.

So I thought I'd share some of the skills and tips I've learnt about how to make Facebook work for small business.

How to make Facebook work for your business:

1. Make the About Us page work for you by linking back to your website, blog and other social media platforms

2. Make it easy for people to contact you through Facebook by having your email and phone number on the about us page.

3. Have a plan for your posts so they communicate a consistent message for your business. You can schedule messages within Facebook business pages. It is a little laborious but can be incorporated into regular marketing administration routines.

4. Form strategic partnerships with like minded business owners with similar audiences and support each other's posts with linked, comments and shares. B sure to get into conversations with each other as the more viral activity the more Facebook with show the post to your followers.

5. Facebook owns the content on Facebook so make sure you link back to your website or blog regularly from your posts to grow traffic for your own site.

6. People love pictures so they are great content for your page. Share your own and other's images - just be sure to acknowledge copyright. If you create very shareable images be sure to include your website watermark in them so you benefit from them being freely used across various social media platforms.

7. Think of Facebook as a sharing tool, as a great tool for nurturing relationships. Saying public thank yous, acknowledging others and sharing other people's content is a great way for making Facebook work for your business.

8. Followers are not interested in a constant stream of promotional messages so make sure you have a mixture of sharing and conversational posts and only a few straight out promotional pieces.

9. Show off your business with some smart photo albums that let you talk about your business while being interesting to followers.

10. Facebook advertising can work well for some campaigns but you need to be careful about setting your overall budget and well as your daily budget. I prefer paying for clicks rather than paying for impressions because I think it is better value and gives me the opportunity of growing my traffic.

To be frank, I have had mixed results from Facebook with promoting posts and advertising and am very wary of it. It seems to me that they are still learning about how to make it an attractive advertising product for small business customers.

11. Learn from other business owners how they are making Facebook work as a marketing tool by reading interviews and attending their workshops and events.

12. Track your success on Facebook by analysing how much traffic it sends to your website or blog by using tools like Google Analytics. While Facebook marketing is often more of a branding and relationship tool it is also important for it to bring qualified traffic to your business blog or website. So to know whether your marketing efforts are working or not it's really important to measure and track the results.
