Seeds of ideas for outdoor living
Where the grass is greenerThis climate of ours is one of the finest in the world so small wonder that Aussies are high on life - and high on the world’s list of those determined to enjoy to the full, the healthiest of outdoor living lifestyles.
What, then, rocks your boat? Sport, BBQs, swimming, lounging around on the beach, wallowing in the backyard pool …or maybe sailing?  Whatever the preference, we are happy to pollinate the imagination with the realisation that Australia’s climate is here, on the doorstep and just waiting to be enjoyed!
There’s a startling range of both new and traditional outdoor activities, hobbies, relaxation and leisure pursuits; so, in traditional mode, gardening and home maintenance will always be there - popular perennials.
Seeds of ideas for outdoor living.

The ‘things to do’ outdoor maintenance list is, though, as long as a deep rooted weed.  It includes, significantly, the lawn…now ’50 shades of green’ and perhaps in desperate need of execution - a final cut.
Gardening is always big business, here in Australia, where annual consumer sales currently nudge the A$2.5 billion mark!  However, in common with all aspects of life and living, this industry too, is going through something of a sea change.
In response to strong demand, then, the tide is turning towards impressive, low maintenance, long lasting solutions. Take a look at a few startling facts:
By 2017, the number of Australian retirees will be nudging the four million mark.  That must be, you would think, hand rubbingly good news for horticulturalists and for garden centres with itchy fingers twitching at the cash till?  Well, it is and it isn’t!

On the downside, as the retired population increases and even gets older – as we all do! - far from being a cash source for horticultural retailers, we ‘oldies’ retreat indoors, drawn more and more to that relatively new, yet fascinating concept, the internet.
It’s a sad fact that, when this happens, the cash tills rust up and garden and outside areas fall in to disrepair.  That, as they say, is life!
*Sunshine, though, usually follows rain and increasingly for many, it comes with the so easy, ‘just like that’ introduction of artificial turf.
Change is always constant… (Oscar Wilde should have said that!)  Take a look at Melbourne – “The Garden City of Australia” and ‘step in to the Melbourne garden, Maud’.
See that, having stumbled across a problem solving artificial lawn, Melbourne residents now treasure it as an indispensible life style enhancer.   They love that new, synthetic turf. Just like a tennis court, their artificial lawns … are ‘number one’ – but strangely, not seeded!
Ideas flow in this fair, but expensive city and gardeners are well advised to note the stunning ideas freely available via a number of informed sources.  These include The Royal Botanic Gardens where essential ideas and inspiration are there for the home owner to enjoy, digest, take home and adapt.
We’ve taken Melbourne as an example.  Any Australian garden, though, is a source for exciting innovation – even for well pruned budgets.
