Nail Care Tip 1. Cuticles – to cut or not to cut? The answer is NO. Always leave your cuticles alone. Cutting off your cuticles might not only damage and cause infection, but also causes it to grow back thicker. Even pushing them back when they are soft can cause some damage, so try not to touch what's there already. Nail Care Tip 2. Minimising professional manicures (and pedicures) As great as a professional manicure and pedicure feels, this can actually cause your nails to become brittle, from all the chemicals that are used to prep your nails. Try and limit this. Applying acrylicscan also damage your nails. This is done by filing and buffing your natural nails down, thus making it more brittle. The cuticles are then pushed back, before you apply glue to natural nail. If you must have acrylics, maybe try just putting them on the tips. This way the damage is limited to the tips of the nails and not where the growth starts. Nail Care Tip 3. Applying base coat before applying your nail polish There are a few benefits of applying a base coat before applying a nail colour. One, you ensure that the colour lasts longer, and therefore minimising the number of times you change your nail polish, which in turn lessens the damage you would do to your nails. Another good reason is that it protects Nail Care Tip 4. Use an all natural nail polish remover Many salons and even stores use and sell acetone based nail polish remover, which can actually damage your nails. The acetone might cause your nails to be brittle and thus causing breakage. There are other natural nail polish removers out there in the market now, with some using a soy and lemongrass oil as their base. Nail Care Tip 5. Avoid harsh detergents and water on your hands This can be a hard one to follow for some, but wearing gloves when you wash the dishes, or when washing anything for that matter, can minimise your hands and nails from drying out. Water can cause damage to the cuticles and therefore cause the nails to become brittle. Nail Care Tip 6. Moisturise your cuticles with natural oil Mother Nature is the best answer for everything. Olive oil, or almond oil are great for moisturising Nail Care Tip 7. Use a fine nail file A fine nail file would help lessen any cracks on the tips of your nails. Whilst rough emery nail boards help gets the job done faster, it does however cause your nail to crack, split and break. Nail Care Tip 8. File in ONE direction only Remember to file your nail in ONE direction only. This will prevent any chipping and breakage. Nail Care Tip 9. Keeping your nails to a more manageable length Whilst having long fingernails might be seen as elegant and pretty for some, this is usually one of the causes of nail breakage. Like our hair, we do need to trim our nails ever so often. Trimming it to a length that we can manage, according to our day-to-day activities would help lessen the chances Nail Care Tip 10. Good diet and nutrition As with any other factor when it comes to beauty, good diet and nutrition is essential in having fabulous looking nails. Foods that are rich in calcium, vitamins and iron would help your nail grow healthily.
