The Things Celebrities Say

It’s true that an overwhelming majority of celebrities should be seen and not heard. Indeed there is nothing more cringe worthy than having to listen to a famous person rant on about an issue they are seemingly  unqualified to comment on alla Tom Cruise's very public criticism of Brooke Shields anti-depressant use to combat post-natal depression or when Sharon Stone casually remarked on the Cannes red carpet that the earthquake in China that killed upwards of 60,000 people could be karma for China's occupation of Tibet.

Huge events like the Oscars, Emmys and Grammys are often hijacked by celebrities keen to let everyone know (well aware of their captive audience) how much they hate war, their sympathy for the plight of refugees, their voting preferences, and their outrage over global warming. True, sometimes there are good intentions behind these outbursts but more often than not it is a grab for attention and knowing so we dismiss celebrity commentary without a second thought.

But that's not always the case, as we all know there are exceptions to the rule and Oprah Winfrey is one of them. Oozing star power and exceptional credibility Oprah is well known for the influential power she has on the public - take for example her overwhelming support of Barack Obama’s election campaign; her ability  to sell products/books/ movies with a mere mention on her show; and the magnitude of the scandal that arose following her on-air declaration that the beef practices in America had stopped her from ''eating another burger” that sparked a $12 million defamation lawsuit.

But it's not all so serious. When they’re not headline grabbing, celebrities, even unscripted, can be amusing and even profound. Below is a collection of some of the things that celebrities have said that have stunned us, baffled us and cracked us up.
