Here is a Method that is Helping Stay at Home Mums Make Money

Stay at home mums are usually giving up a steady pay check to run the home and look after the kids but this does not mean that you have to rely completely on a partner for income. There are many ways for you to be able to stay at home but still be involved in something that brings in additional money.

We’ve done the research and here are some of the best ways to make money from home.

2. Sell your writing skills

One of the best ways to make money from home provided you have the skills and the training beforehand is to engage in freelance writing. The internet has made this far easier than it would have been twenty years ago. Today, you may be able to receive a writing assignment shortly after deciding to do it at all.

There are a variety of markets that you can participate in. Many magazines, both print and online, take on freelance writers to write on a vast assortment of subjects. Often which magazine you may choose to write for will depend on your own personal interests.

Likewise, for a more long-term project you may choose to write a larger body of work such as a novel or collection of short stories. Publishers are always looking for the next big thing and many people have gained a substantial amount of fame and income by writing part-time from home.

If you choose to take part in freelance writing as a moneymaking scheme, a good idea is to complement your writing projects and start a blog. This will serve you in a myriad of ways – firstly, it will allow you to connect with a potential customer base that may follow your other work and provide valuable marketing.

Secondly, this will hone your writing skills by encouraging constructive criticism and the better your writing ability, the better rates you may be able to command for future writing assignments.

What you need to get started as a freelance writer:

Choose the market you want to write for. This doesn’t just mean the type of work you wish to create e.g. magazine articles, online blog or a novella but also the nature of the subject/s you might like to cover. You may be extremely knowledgeable about fashion so use that interest and submit critiques on latest spring trends to popular magazines or even start your own fashion blog.

Or you might be a voracious reader as well as writer and blog about the new wonderful books you have read while writing your own piece of work. Of course, if you wish to write about a variety of subjects – do not feel limited by the above examples but be sure to research your potential market and structure your writing so as to be of the highest appeal.

Additionally, make sure you have the proper tools at home to undertake freelance writing assignments. The most major concern is your computer and internet facilities. Ensure that any program you use to write with will be compatible with whatever your clients use (usually Microsoft Word), you have enough memory and sufficient external systems to back up your written work and your processor is fast enough to handle the projects you are doing.

2. Sell your expertise

If you think you don’t have the right skills or temperament to be a freelance writer, never fear. Other skills that you do have can also easily be used to help generate extra income from home. With some determination and clever marketing, you can run intimate classes from home selling your experience to the public.

Are you fluent in French? Consider organising a language class for the people in your neighbourhood. A fantastic cook? Have your social network friends and acquaintances over to learn how to create your culinary creations for a small fee. Got a talent for Latin dance or yoga? Arrange some unused open space in your home for a casual exercise class with like-minded people. The possibilities are numerous.

Be prepared to differentiate yourself from everyone else who has had the same ideas. If you’d like to teach a cooking class, think of a fun hook or specialisation you can offer your potential customers such as a dessert class or cuisine from a particular country or ethnic background. If you’re running a dance class, spend some time each week to think up a fun new routine you can teach your clients and get them signing up again and again.

3. Sell your living space

If your home is located in a prime tourist location or close to the airport and other conveniences, you may be able to make a substantial amount of extra income by renting out a spare bedroom and bathroom as a bed and breakfast. Obviously if having extra people in your home is going to be more of a nuisance than a pleasure, this may not be for you but if you have extra space and love to meet new people this may be just the thing.

Of course, there are several things you must consider to run a successful bed and breakfast. Location is probably the most significant but even if your home is far away from the traditional sights of your city, you can still be successful though it may require a lot more work.

Additionally, take the needs of your prospective customers into account. Ensure that the room is comfortable, inviting and any little annoyances such as noises or smells are taken care of.

Likewise, put yourself in the shoes of the customer. Be prepared to offer a service rather than just room and board. Make an effort to get to know your guest, take care of their requests and if they are travelling for the purposes of tourism – help them organise their day, suggest popular sights to see and where to eat.

This will ensure that your guests will provide positive reviews of the experience and therefore produce invaluable advertising for your services.

These methods need not take a lot of your valuable time with the kids in order to generate a steady flow of extra income. Whatever your skills and experience, there are a number of ways to use what you know and make good money as a stay at home mum.
