Marion's Inspiration and Dreams

Marion's Inspiration and Dreams

Marion Wheatland is in her 50's and this is her story.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by the past - strange to say. People of history, places of old, items from long ago. My best piece of furniture is an antique marble-top dressing table belonging to my grandmother.
Growing up in Canada, we visited many historical places - forts, exhibitions, museums - and in moving to Australia, we continued to do the same. I have often thought that I was born in the wrong century!

What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about anything to do with wool, and fibre and spinning and this matches really well with my love of history, since wool and spinning is so "pioneer"! In fact, I combined my two passions by taking my spinning wheel to Antarctica, and sitting out on the Ice in front of Mawson's Huts, spun the yarn to knit the replica balaclava that was auctioned at the Centenary Dinner in Hobart recently.

Not only did I spin "Where No One Has Spun Before", but I created the garment that raised $1100 for the Mawson's Huts Foundation - the body dedicated to the restoration of the site at Cape Denison. A win for me, a win for the Foundation and a win for Australian Antarctic History!

What is your life philosophy?
Love life, be adventurous, be of help to others and to God. Faith helps tackle any challenge.

What do you love about having your own business? In my own business, I have a flexible timetable, to accommodate clients, task, calls and travel. Scheduling can be hectic at times, and I love being busy and achieving.

What's the most challenging thing about having your own business?
I do find, however, being by myself and having to do all the things myself, things can be a tad overwhelming! And not done as well as I would have liked -- I could use a secretary!

I love a challenge. for example, my brother DARED me to take my spinning wheel to Antarctica. Saying that something cannot be done is sure to make me try my best to find a way to accomplish that thing. Usually it's a win.
What's the best gift you've ever received?

When I moved out of home, my Dad gave me a hammer, a screwdriver and a wrench. That was a strange gift, I thought at the time, but it really gave me an insight into the practicalities of running my own living space.
A hammer to put up the pictures, a screwdriver to put handles back on the cooking pots and a wrench to assemble the furniture. My tool collection has grown over the years, to include a sander, grinder, plane, chisels....all the equipment I need to repair spinning wheels!

What's the best thing you do or have done in your life?
My two grown sons give me great joy - from babies with toys to men with wives of their own, it has been an exciting and sometimes dramatic journey. The thing I am most proud of at the moment is my Antarctic trip and the Balaclava project - it was the fulfillment of a secret and very dear dream.

What should you do more of?
I would like to travel, to spin at all the world icons, both natural and manmade: Great wall of China, Eiffel Tower, Parthenon, Pompeii, Niagara, Stonehenge......

What should you do less of?
I really should do less collecting.....
What do you admire about you closest friend?

My closest friend is a very godly woman. She is a fabulous prayer support and sounding board, she has great knowledge and great wisdom. I love her dearly.

What does quality of life mean to you?
God has given us life to have to the full. Anything less that full is not life at all - it is just existence.

What did you learn from the hardest thing you've ever gone through?
My younger son gave me my biggest challenge. I discovered that there is a peace and wisdom on the otherside of hardship. The fact that you have come through proves your toughness and strength of character. And you are always the better for it.

What values do you want your children to learn from you?
I would want my children to learn the value of prayer and that faith works. I also want them to see that helping others is a great reward and that a small act of kindness can change someone's life. They have shown me glimpses of their understanding of this.

Do you dance, sing, laugh enough?
No one dances, sings and laughs enough. We can see the world as a really harsh place, filled with traps and snares, in which case we need to dance and sing and laugh just to get through. Or we can see it as the joy that it is, to be alive in which case, the dancing, singing and laughter is a RESPONSE to the world.
