Dental health is crucial to your wellbeing but often, many are unaware of what is required for adequate preventative care. Simply brushing is not enough and even that requires diligence and proper technique.

We have collected the best tips on how to brush, floss and take care of your teeth to help you achieve your most dazzling smile.

Tips on Preventative Dental Care

Here are the top tips for a beautiful smile:

Brushing Tips:

Brush at least twice a day – use a brush with soft bristles and a small head for better access to the teeth at the back. Use small circular motions and brush for at least two to three minutes.

Make sure to brush the front of the teeth, back of the teeth and the chewing surfaces. For the latter, use gentle back and forth motions.

Do not brush too fast or too harshly as this may cause gums to recede, expose root surfaces and eventually lead to tooth sensitivity.

Replace your toothbrush every two to three months or as soon as the bristles are bent and worn out. An overused toothbrush does not clean your teeth properly and may even harm your gums.

Brush your tongue afterwards – this will assist in ridding you of bad breath as bacteria and plaque can collect on the tongue.

Use fluoridated toothpaste – fluoride assists in the hardening of tooth enamel and reduces the chance of tooth decay. A pea-sized amount is adequate.

Flossing Tips:

Wrap about 40 centimetres of floss around your middle fingers, hold the floss tightly and gently guide it between your teeth.

Do not snap the floss or attempt to floss too quickly as this will cut the gums.

When the floss reaches the gum line, curve it against one tooth and gently slide it into the space between the gum and the tooth until you feel pressure against the tooth.

Gently scrape the side of the tooth with the floss.

Move on to a clean area of the floss after a few teeth to prevent the spread of bacteria or cutting the gums.

Floss at least once daily – flossing clears plaque and food particles in between teeth that simple brushing cannot get to. Use a slow and thorough sawing motion to floss effectively.

Other Tips:

Limit sugary and acidic foods and beverages – bacteria in dental plaque convert sugars into acid, these food acids then soften tooth enamel by dissolving minerals and may cause holes and cavities.

If this persists without adequate treatment, teeth may be worn down to the gum. The longer sugar stays in touch with your teeth, the more damage it can do.

Don't snack before bedtime as saliva is less effective at cleaning your mouth at night.

Some good foods for dental health are – dairy foods like cheese, milk and yogurt as well as some types of nuts. These contain calcium for bone and teeth strength.

Chewing sugar-free gum can be a convenient way to get rid of harmful sugars in the mouth and reduce the formation of plaque.

Avoid using your teeth for activities other than chewing – using your teeth to open bottles or crack nuts can lead to chipping and possibly breaking your teeth.

Protect your teeth if you engage in sport – wear a helmet or a mouth guard during play.

See your dentist for regular check-ups – at least every six months. You should also see your dentist for any immediate issues – bleeding gums, cavities or a toothache.

Quit smoking as it increases the danger of gum disease, stains your teeth and puts you at risk of mouth and throat cancer.

A great smile need not be an impossible achievement. Following these tips and making a habit of them will ensure that you abstain from serious dental health problems and maintain beautiful, healthy teeth.
