How to Treat Babies With Eczema: 5 Simple Steps

Eczema is a painful condition that causes the skin to become itchy, red, and dry, leading to a poorer quality of life. An alarming number of children worldwide suffer from eczema due to their particularly sensitive skin.

Due to the sometimes intense nature of eczema treatments (like bleach baths), it can be difficult for parents to learn how to treat a baby with eczema in safe, effective ways. But rest assured: there is a solution. In this article, we’ll show you five simple steps to help you treat your baby for eczema in no time.

Let’s get started!

1. Wash Your Hands

Before beginning any treatment, wash your hands. Washing hands prior to touching your child will help keep the bacteria on your skin from being transferred to them and/or worsening their eczema.

It’s essential to wash off any oils or creams after touching other objects to minimize the transfer of irritants onto your child. This can cause further discomfort for your baby’s skin and prolong the problem.

2. Put On Gloves To Avoid Contact With the Eczema

In the same vein, if you’re trying to help your baby with their eczema treatment, it is important to avoid direct contact with the affected skin to prevent further irritation (despite your best intentions).

This can be difficult for parents because babies by nature need to be constantly held and touched. However, wearing gloves in preparation for their eczema treatment will help reduce their discomfort by providing a barrier between your hands and their rash.

3. Apply Eczema-Relieving Creams Or Ointments

Many companies, My Mia’s Skin Relief included, provide special eczema-reducing creams or ointments. Eczema Treatments like our Skin Relief Kit were developed over years to lessen eczema symptoms and provide cool, gentle relief to your children.

It is important to follow any application instructions exactly as directed by the label (or a doctor). Make sure you’re applying only the directed amount to the skin – too much can lead to overhydration, which can counterintuitively worsen the problem.

4. Avoid Scratching The Area And Keep It Dry

Scratching skin with eczema can cause your baby’s skin to become raw and even more irritated. If possible, try putting a band-aid over it to add protection (like mittens). The special padding helps cover their skin from being scratched while also keeping it infection-resistant — a crucial part of the healing process.

5. Keep Babies’ Fingernails Short

Short fingernails can help prevent your baby from accidentally scratching themselves, which could lead to a skin infection. Keeping their nails short will also reduce the risk of injury in a possible scenario where they scratch anyone else as well.
